FORLIANCE is developing a community-based forestry project. Together with our partner AlaBoOL, we are working on improving the forest management in the Yucatan peninsula and in the Durango federal state.
The Ejidos – knowledge passed on through generations
During the 1930 the Mexican Government introduced agrarian reforms throughout the country. These reforms led to the creation of Ejidos. A community-based system where land is cooperatively managed. The Ejidos ensure responsible forest management in a region where forests have been historically susceptible to illegal and unregulated logging.
FORLIANCE is working closely with the local communities. 15 Ejidos some of which have a Mayan background are conserving the forest and making sure it remains sustainable forever. Reforestation is part of the Ejidos forest management plans and contributes to allowing valuable and endangered species to regrow for future generations.
Creating solutions by putting people in the centre
Facilitating local communities and indigenous groups to create updated and accurate knowledge about climate change in their jurisdiction will pave the path for more relevant, regionally appropriate policy that is led by those most affected.
The indigenous systems of agricultural and forest management are characterized by a deep knowledge of ecological processes and biodiversity. By placing indigenous people’s knowledge at the forefront of climate forestry projects we create the platforms for impactful and trustful activities which serve nature and local communities.

XiCo Project Goals
We at FORLIANCE are co-developing the project and implementing the activities on the ground by working closely with the people on site. With joined forces we strive towards our goal to conserve and recreate the forest and secure a stable income for the communities. The Improved Forest Management System is a main approach that will play a major role in the restoration of the forest. The project area extends to 150,000 ha and it is expected to impact around 2400 stakeholders/inhabitants. This unique and impactful project will be certified by not only with VCS and CCB but also with FSC for forest management.
Our Managing Director Dirk Walterspacher, Climate Solutions Senior Director Julian Ekelhof and Nature-Based Solutions Senior Director German Rodriguez recently visited the project area. Directly exchanging with the people working on site is always an important and insightful step in the project development.
